Courage with Glennon Doyle: Lover & Fighter

Courage with Glennon Doyle: Lover & Fighter

By Bre Russell

“I felt overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time. Like everything is too much and yet not enough. Lonely yet never alone.” said Glennon in her book Love Warrior.

Glennon has inspired me to flow between contrasts courageously. From deliriously happy with laughter to dull mind numbing boredom. Or from irritation to flirtation.

In her recent interview on the podcast On Being with Krista Tippett, she talked about what it means to be courageous. She went through alcoholism, bulimia, divorce and came out a better, stronger person than before.

Fortunately, I haven’t had as extreme of circumstances to work through but I do relate to her words of over- and under- whelm.

How is it possible to be busy and go go go yet feel bored and unfulfilled?

Glennon decided to help someone else in need first. She started a campaign to help a homeless fourteen year old and her newborn get into a women’s center in Pennsylvania. By starting the Love Flash Mob she was able to raise enough money for this young mother.

From her love and compassion began her road to philanthropy and the start of her nonprofit called Together Rising. Glennon said she soon realized she had to do more than just help the people suffering.

In her interview she quoted, “‘You can only pull people out of the river for so long until you have to look upriver to find out who’s pushing them in.’” Through her love she found the fighter in her and got really involved with the Compassion Collective to advocate for institutional change.

Here’s what I learned from Glennon:

  • Give love to the universe

  • Help someone in need

  • Focus less on the lack and more on the joy

  • Connect with others and the human spirit

  • Be honest and courageous about showing your true self

  • Keep hope alive

  • Just do the next right thing

“I just want to spend the rest of my life pulling people out of the river and also creating living hell for the people that are pushing them in.” Glennon’s passion is contagious, I immediately feel a rush of energy to DO...something...anything.

Ok so the next right thing for me is...sharing these stories.

What is your next right thing that you will pursue with courage?
