I recently came across this quote that said, “Find three hobbies you love: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative.”

Seeing this quote made me think about what my three loves are. To my own surprise, I had one for each category that I did just about every day by habit and with joy.

The first of course is my purpose at Girls Leading Girls, the nonprofit I started in 2014 that trains girls in leadership through soccer. Even though I’m not coaching girls on the field anymore I find great joy in strategic planning and selling people on our mission. Sales has always been a fun game to me, its competitive and you have to figure out how to get the person to say yes! Selling something I believe in is WAY easier than when I used to sell house paint jobs in college. So I enjoy figuring out how to make the organization more efficient, how to leverage our growth for future sustainability, and how to get more people to buy into our mission.

Second, the hobby that keeps me in shape and keeps my body happy is Yoga! I’ve been doing yoga on and off for the past 14 years. In my 20s I tried Bikhram yoga because I wanted a physical challenge. I found it hard to focus during regular yoga and I preferred to get a good sweat by going for a run or playing soccer.

Now in my 30s, I really appreciate the yoga philosophy and taking the time to quiet my mind. I also appreciate taking it slow, stretching my body and building strength now that I can no longer play soccer due to back and leg pain. Running was my zen place, but now it can also be painful on my joints even though I’ll still go for a run every now and then. Yoga has been my consistent daily practice the last three months, going to classes gives me that sense of community and the push I need from a teacher. Happy to say that my back feels incredibly better. It feels like my whole body is being realigned.

I find it interesting how we need different things at different times in our lives.

My third hobby, is creative journaling. I’ve also loved to journal and this past year I’ve really started getting more creative with my journaling practice. Now I have stickers, different colored markers, different prompts and ideas I put in my journal. It’s nice to have a productive outlet for downtime other than reading or watching Netflix.
